Jeff Ferguson was raised on a farm in Laurens, Iowa, until the age of ten, when he moved to Spirit Lake/Lake Okoboji, Iowa. After graduating with a BS in Animal Science from Iowa State University, he immediately started a cattle dealer business, and made his first trip to Montana in 1979. He lived in Lewistown, Montana, until 1985, when he moved to Bozeman.
He has grown his cattle and trucking business over the years, and sold 40,000 cattle on sales of $30 million in 2005. His business, www.stockyards.biz, represents and sells Montana cattle to active online bidders.
Jeff has been married to his wife, Barbara, for 23 years; 3-year-old Lab sidekick, Joker, and 14-year-old Golden Retriever, Maddie, complete the family. Jeff has been fly fishing since 1980 and was a board member of Madison/Gallatin Trout Unlimited from 1994-2000. He is presently a member of the Stewardship Council, National Trout Unlimited.
He has fished all local Montana waters, as well as Lochsa, Wood, Clearwater, Warm, and Henry’s Fork in Idaho; the North Platte, Wind, Encampment, Greys, Powder, Tongue, Green, and Salt rivers of Wyoming; the Madison, Firehole, and Gibbon in Yellowstone National Park; the Green below Flaming Gorge, Utah; the San Juan in New Mexico; the Colorado at Lee’s Ferry in Arizona; the Poudre, Blue, St. Vrain, Animas, and Big Thompson in Colorado; and the creeks of the Black Hills in South Dakota.
Additionally, he has bonefished in the Bahamas, and also fished in Belize, Key West and New Orleans. Recently, Jeff has taken up spey casting for steelhead and has fished the Deschutes River in Oregon and the Clearwater in Idaho.
With his wife, Barb, he has chartered and crewed catamarans twice in the British Virgin Islands and once in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Destinations on the horizon include Patagonia, South America, for trout, Tierra del Fuego, South America, for sea run browns, and Baja, Mexico, for sails, dorado and roosterfish.
Barb formed a non-profit called Cowboys for the Cure, and is working on raising money for cancer research. Barb and Jeff also enjoy wine, and have a 400-bottle wine collection, mostly from Australia.
